The effective arrangement of Special Low Dispersion SLD and aspherical glass elements has created a lens of compact dimensions. With an overall length of 84.7mm 3.3in. it is the smallest lens of this focal range. This lens offers a large aperture of F 2.8 over its entire range of focal lengths which is ideal for low light situations both indoors and out. It has a large depth of field that offers the photographer greater freedom of expression.By using a new technology and optical design this lens satisfies the needs of digital photography. Two Special Low Dispersion SLD glass elements are provided for effective compensation of color aberration which is a common problem with wide-angle lenses. Four aspherical lenses one molded glass type and three hybrid aspherical types offer excellent correction for distortion as well as all types of aberration. The design concept of this lens is especially suitable for the characteristics of Digital SLR Cameras. New coating reduces flare and ghost which is a common problem of digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance. This lens has excellent correction for "light-fall-off" which is a common problem of large aperture lenses.The design ensures sufficient illumination of the corners of the image.It is capable of taking pictures with a minimum focusing distance of 38cm 15.0in at all focal lengths. It is very effective for close-up photography. The high performance inner focus system is particularly suitable for using circular polarizing filters and a petal-type hood as the front of the lens does not rotate.This lens is also equipped with a zoom lock that eliminates "Zoom Creep". Excellent lens for price but may need servicing.
I bought my lens from Cameta Camera and it would seem that a great number of lens people are receiving from Cameta have been having front and/or back focus issues. I used my lens for awhile in spite of its focus issues and found it to perform quite well especially for the nice $200ish price. Its not on par with Canon L lens by any stretch of the imagination but I think this is great throw-in lens. Its very sturdily constructed and I actually prefer its lens hood to the ones Canon makes. I finally sent my lens in to Sigma a few weeks ago for servicing and its been there since so I will update this review once I receive it back. Anyone who is looking to buy this lens or has bought it - I would highly suggest running some focus tests on the lens to see if your lens needs servicing . . .

Great lens for the money
I had this lens for a few months before I acquired a Canon 24-70 f/2.8L. Let me say that this lens is much better than the Sigma 24-70 in both size weight and image quality. It offers a constant f/2.8 aperture and focuses relatively fast for a non-HSM lens. I was more than happy with the quality of the images that this lens produces. I believe the only flaw with this lens is the fact that Sigma didnt make it a HSM version. This is a tough competitor for Canons 24-70 but its still in second place to the Canon. You cant beat the price for the lens either. Given the build quality image quality and overall functionality of this lens the price is a steal I would definitely recommend this to anyone who asks for a budget lens like this.

If your comparing this to an L lens you will be surprised. On a crop body its a bit long but rarely have I had to back up too far to get the shot. I was out shooting some pictures of my kids playing 8pm the other evening August in Texas. I was quite happy with the pictures I shot with this lens. Even without a flash it was not quite dark yet and the street lamps gave off enough light. I do not consider myself a pro or even an amateur. If your looking for a good walk around lens for a full or crop body consider this lens. Its worth it money and quality wise. Pros: Price Usable on a crop body and full body so you can keep the lens if you move from crop to full. My copy is sharp as a tack. No back or forward focus. Cons: Some have reported that their copy was back or forward focusing. Or the zoom ring was "tight". The good news is if you buy it from an authorized dealer for Sigma Cameta Camera in the link above is Authorized you get the full Warranty. Send it in and they will fix it for you. It just costs shipping. Conclusion: Its a great lens. I am loving the shots I am getting from it. All photographers are different some do sports some do landscapes. Some just want good HQ pics of the kids. I am all 3. This lens replaced my kit lens Canon 18-55 NON IS. I do not miss the wide and am loving the extra zoom. YMMV.

Will Always Be a Great Camera
Regardless of where technology takes photography in the next 5/10 years this will always be a great camera. I have a feeling it will be one of those classics that some people will carry around forever.

Seller changed mind
I cannot rate this product simply because the seller pulled the item and even though he refunded my money promptly I missed out on the sell after he reposted it. He said he didnt have all the pieces or accessories together and had to pull the camera. Shouldnt that have been done before he posted the camera for sale in the first place?? Not only was there not enough information on the camera and I had to continually email the seller. But then I didnt recieve the emails in a timely manner to inform me that he had reposted the item. Very disappointed.

Camera Is Great But Do Not Buy Big Ticket Items from Amazon
I gave two stars to get the attention of those wanting to buy big ticket price point goodies from Amazon. The Canon 5D is - mostly - all that its cracked up to be. However you are well advised not to buy this item through Amazon - let alone any big ticket item. I received the camera and it was poorly packed. When I opened the camera it appeared that it may have been a previous return. There were marks on the back of the camera as if someone using lotion or who has handled greasy food had handled the camera. I checked the camera and otherwise all seemed to be working properly and all documentation and accessories were present. So given the hassle of returning online purchases I decided to keep the camera. Then I was doing some high-key background editorial work at f22 and noticed some unusual artifact. Upon looping the sensor it turns out that the sensor had a minor scratch. This was a latent defect that was not readily observable even upon fairly rigid inspection of the camera. I contacted Amazon and by this time the return window was 20 days past. I was just looking to exchange the camera for an identical model. Amazons response was not just "too bad" but actually three conflicting responses which would have only compounded the problem if I sent the camera off to the "never never land" of Amazon returns. I would have been without a camera and without a refund. One customer service agent said that I couldnt exchange the camera as Amazon doesnt sell the Canon 5D any longer. In fact they do. Another agent said to return the camera for a refund and make sure it was insured for shipping. Upon seeking to clarify the return terms another agent responded and said that Amazon "stands firm" by its policy that a return cannot be made after the 30 day window has expired. My mistake? First not returning the item immediately. Second not spending a couple more hundred to have the peace of mind of dealing with a trusted camera shop. The moral of the story is "Do not buy big ticket items from price point online vendors such as Amazon unless you can take the downside of getting burned." Welcome to the new world of retail.

Love this camera
This camera is awesome. It is great in low light and I can still ghost images which I prefer doing. Ive gone to the dark side digital and I really enjoy it. This is my first DSLR.

Seller changed mind
I cannot rate this product simply because the seller pulled the item and even though he refunded my money promptly I missed out on the sell after he reposted it. He said he didnt have all the pieces or accessories together and had to pull the camera. Shouldnt that have been done before he posted the camera for sale in the first place?? Not only was there not enough information on the camera and I had to continually email the seller. But then I didnt recieve the emails in a timely manner to inform me that he had reposted the item. Very disappointed.

Camera Is Great But Do Not Buy Big Ticket Items from Amazon
I gave two stars to get the attention of those wanting to buy big ticket price point goodies from Amazon. The Canon 5D is - mostly - all that its cracked up to be. However you are well advised not to buy this item through Amazon - let alone any big ticket item. I received the camera and it was poorly packed. When I opened the camera it appeared that it may have been a previous return. There were marks on the back of the camera as if someone using lotion or who has handled greasy food had handled the camera. I checked the camera and otherwise all seemed to be working properly and all documentation and accessories were present. So given the hassle of returning online purchases I decided to keep the camera. Then I was doing some high-key background editorial work at f22 and noticed some unusual artifact. Upon looping the sensor it turns out that the sensor had a minor scratch. This was a latent defect that was not readily observable even upon fairly rigid inspection of the camera. I contacted Amazon and by this time the return window was 20 days past. I was just looking to exchange the camera for an identical model. Amazons response was not just "too bad" but actually three conflicting responses which would have only compounded the problem if I sent the camera off to the "never never land" of Amazon returns. I would have been without a camera and without a refund. One customer service agent said that I couldnt exchange the camera as Amazon doesnt sell the Canon 5D any longer. In fact they do. Another agent said to return the camera for a refund and make sure it was insured for shipping. Upon seeking to clarify the return terms another agent responded and said that Amazon "stands firm" by its policy that a return cannot be made after the 30 day window has expired. My mistake? First not returning the item immediately. Second not spending a couple more hundred to have the peace of mind of dealing with a trusted camera shop. The moral of the story is "Do not buy big ticket items from price point online vendors such as Amazon unless you can take the downside of getting burned." Welcome to the new world of retail.

Love this camera
This camera is awesome. It is great in low light and I can still ghost images which I prefer doing. Ive gone to the dark side digital and I really enjoy it. This is my first DSLR.

Algo decepcionado
Compre este lente para reemplazar a mi 28-135 IS co el cual siempre obtuve buenas fotografias. El 24-105 L IS esta magnificamente construido pero no es lo suficientemente Sharp... sera mi copia ? Lo he probado en mis dos camaras : 40D y XSi. Siempre necesita trabajo en mi Lightroom. Lo mismo me ocurre con el 17-40L pero en menor medida. Mi proxima compra sera el 135 L f2 espero que sea el lente Sharp que busco..

Well Balanced Lens
This is my first L series purchase and the build quality is exactly what everyone is saying its built like a tank. Not to waste anyones time but this review is not for someone who wants to know all about the technical details you can read all about that at the canon website and many others. In short the lens is great and worth the money in my opinion Its super fast and has a very SOLID feel to it. It fits like a glove on a canon 30D and similar bodies. It does search a bit in low light but i rarely shoot indoors you have to expect that from any lens with f/4. In that case just bump up the ISO and use the terrific IS and you will produce fantastic indoor images. You can take great pictures with this lens IF you know how to use your camera settings. It pairs very well with a wide angle lens such as the Sigma 10-20. I found it somewhat difficult at first using this lens on a cropped body. After using the sigma for almost six months it took some getting use to the new view on a cropped sensor 38mm-168mm. I am a landscape photographer at heart but i felt that if i wanted to be a well rounded photographer i needed to venture out and explore other subjects and i believe that i picked the right lens to do that. As everyone else has mentioned it is a great travel/general lens and i found the extra zoom on my cropped body to come in handy. I would highly reccommend this lens to you but more importantly i would make sure that you understood how to use your camera first using aperture shutter speeds exposure compensation etc. Theres no point in buying a Ferrari if you cant drive a stick.

Best walk around lens by Canon
After doing much research on various websites and message forums Ive come to the conclusion that the 24-105 L is the perfect walk around by Canon. Although I was cautious by the weight it is suprisingly comfortable to carry. Ive spent a few days out with the camera on me hours at a time and had no weight issues. Very awesome lens Very sharp and worth every penny

The best canon standard zoom lens
I bought this lens 3 months ago and Im loving it. There is still slight back focusing issue in some distances condition but its really ignorable. The picture is sharp as knife and L lens reputation does what it suppose to do. Previously I had 18-55mm 50mm 1.8 and Sigma 18-200mm DC OS now I sold all of them because this lens deserves every penny I paid. Zoom range is little dissappointing but I heard 3x zoom range is the maximum capability that can bring the best picture quality which means if the zoom range go more than 3x the quality degrades. So for example 18-200mm lens is good for all around purpose which covers 10x zoom from wide angle to super zoom but the quality isnt great as lens that zooms 3x or less. So Im quite happy with this lens so far. And if I point out one that really bothers me about this lens is its weight. Because after I carry this lens with my 40D on my shoulder for hours I easily get tired. =P Everything else is wonderful. You will forgive tireness once you see the quality of the pictures you take with this lens. I highly recommend this lens to all canon users. 5 stars

Tactically Tac-Sharp
When I was looking for a General Purpose glass I contemplated between the 24-105mm F4L & this one. I knew that this lens would weigh much heavier than the 24-105 because of the 2.8 glass which could be a potential concern. I really didnt need the extra focal length as I already have the 70-200 for that. I knew that the 24-105 & 24-70 would run neck & neck as far as sharpness being that theyre both L-Lenses. But I did love the speed of the 2.8 on my 70-200IS so I decided on the 24-70. I have no regrets but damn.. damn. damn What a piece of Glass And the weight while on any of my Canon bodies indeed its Heavy... But I dont mind after seeing the results. I actually like it being heavy. My my my its Oh so sharp Another bonus feature I love is the Lens Hood which BTW came with the lens & I have it on 100% of the time stays in a fixed position it does not extend/retract the objective lens retracts deeper into the hood as the focal length is increased. The hood is deep & huge It looks DOMINATING All I know is that if I went with the 24-105mm F4L soon if not later Ill always wonder how the 24-70mm F2.8L would be & probably end up buying one down the road. Hence ending up with 2 General Purpose glass that have practically similar focal range. Grant it the 24-105 has IS extra focal length & much lighterNo thanks. I get nothing less than Tactically Tac-Sharp images Going with the 24-70mm F2.8L route Ill never wonder about the 24-105 nor own one for that matter. If you get the 24-105 youll end up buying this later on Im sure of it. If you get this first... After using it - Believe me youll never want the 24-105. Save & spend your money on the 70-200mm F2.8L IS instead. As partners these two are a one two punch to have in your Canon Gear

Extremely disappointed with this lens. Poor focus after 15 Images never sharp under any condition. Not at all what you would expect from an L series. Lots of $$$$ poor performance.
