Will Always Be a Great Camera
Regardless of where technology takes photography in the next 5/10 years this will always be a great camera. I have a feeling it will be one of those classics that some people will carry around forever.

Seller changed mind
I cannot rate this product simply because the seller pulled the item and even though he refunded my money promptly I missed out on the sell after he reposted it. He said he didnt have all the pieces or accessories together and had to pull the camera. Shouldnt that have been done before he posted the camera for sale in the first place?? Not only was there not enough information on the camera and I had to continually email the seller. But then I didnt recieve the emails in a timely manner to inform me that he had reposted the item. Very disappointed.

Camera Is Great But Do Not Buy Big Ticket Items from Amazon
I gave two stars to get the attention of those wanting to buy big ticket price point goodies from Amazon. The Canon 5D is - mostly - all that its cracked up to be. However you are well advised not to buy this item through Amazon - let alone any big ticket item. I received the camera and it was poorly packed. When I opened the camera it appeared that it may have been a previous return. There were marks on the back of the camera as if someone using lotion or who has handled greasy food had handled the camera. I checked the camera and otherwise all seemed to be working properly and all documentation and accessories were present. So given the hassle of returning online purchases I decided to keep the camera. Then I was doing some high-key background editorial work at f22 and noticed some unusual artifact. Upon looping the sensor it turns out that the sensor had a minor scratch. This was a latent defect that was not readily observable even upon fairly rigid inspection of the camera. I contacted Amazon and by this time the return window was 20 days past. I was just looking to exchange the camera for an identical model. Amazons response was not just "too bad" but actually three conflicting responses which would have only compounded the problem if I sent the camera off to the "never never land" of Amazon returns. I would have been without a camera and without a refund. One customer service agent said that I couldnt exchange the camera as Amazon doesnt sell the Canon 5D any longer. In fact they do. Another agent said to return the camera for a refund and make sure it was insured for shipping. Upon seeking to clarify the return terms another agent responded and said that Amazon "stands firm" by its policy that a return cannot be made after the 30 day window has expired. My mistake? First not returning the item immediately. Second not spending a couple more hundred to have the peace of mind of dealing with a trusted camera shop. The moral of the story is "Do not buy big ticket items from price point online vendors such as Amazon unless you can take the downside of getting burned." Welcome to the new world of retail.

Love this camera
This camera is awesome. It is great in low light and I can still ghost images which I prefer doing. Ive gone to the dark side digital and I really enjoy it. This is my first DSLR.

Customer Reviews

first slr
This is my first slr camera but I absolutely love it. Ive been playing around with all the features the quality is amazing. Some people complain about the size of the camera but I have rather small hands which I suppose has worked to my advantage. Basically its fantastic.

What a great dSLR for a beginner
Add my voice to the chorus singing the praises of this little camera This is my very first SLR though Ive had a string of digital point-and-shoots and this camera is such a step up its like magic. There is so much to learn and this is just the camera to learn on. You can put it all on auto and use it just like a point-and-shoot and get better pictures. Or you can really delve into the art of photography this camera is so user-friendly. The kit lens is just fine for my needs -- Im sure Ill want faster longer etc but this is flexible enough to start on.

Fantastic sensor great functionality okay kit lens
Overall this is a first-class entry from Canon with a superb 12.2MP CMOS sensor that keeps noise to a minimum even more so with NR enabled. Paired with good lenses the XSI/450D can provide jaw-dropping images with incredible detail. Overall shooting speed is very good and the viewfinder is generously sized. The LCD is large and bright. As theres a large number of reviews of the Rebel XSI/EOS450D already Ill attempt to detail the negative aspects of the camera so prospective owners can decide if any of them are deal-breakers. -Body Construction. The XSI is built almost entirely of high density plastic and feels more flimsy than the Nikons. The plastic LCD cover is quite exposed and so needs an after-market screen protector. There is no dedicated settings/metering LCD on the top of the camera. The battery compartment appears to be relatively fragile when opened. If weather sealing and robustness are paramount the Pentax K200D is much more solidly built at a slightly lower price point. -Indoor Auto White Balance. While you can correct this issue with custom WB settings the fact remains that under fluorescent light the XSI is off color balance wise using Auto cloudy or fluorescent settings. Even using the on board LCD it is obvious that theres too much red/yellow under fluorescent. Incandescent is better but still imperfect. Tungsten seems very good oddly and during daylight hours the WB seems excellent. Nikon seems to have fewer problems with their default settings in this area but most manufacturers have some WB issues out of the box. -Ergonomics. The XSI hand grip is relatively short and less secure in my large hands than the Nikons Pentaxes and Sonys Ive tried. While the grip is not in any way uncomfortable its small size means Im gripping the camera with my middle and ring fingers bracing the bottom with my little finger. A hand strap might come in handy but the Opteka feels too flimsy for my taste. -Kit Lens. The included lens is a step up from a P&S camera but not very impressive by SLR standards. By kit lens standards it is good and the image stabilization works quite nicely. Were I to buy the camera today I would probably forgo the kit lens altogether and jump right in to a 28mm prime keeping my f1.8 II 50mm. The difference in image quality between the f1.8 II 50mm and the kit lens is considerable. Note the 1.6x crop factor 50mm effectively 80mm for example due to the APS-C sized sensor. -Default JPEG settings. The default JPEG settings are pretty good but seem a bit less saturated and a bit sharper than typical for consumer-level Canon. RAW is of course flawless. -Proprietary LiIon battery. The 450D uses a rather long-lasting 7.4V 1080mAH Canon battery and includes a charger replacements are not cheap and third-party versions can be inferior. Nearly all other manufacturers use proprietary packs with the K200D being the sole exception Im aware of. -Live View is very limited and cannot be used in Auto mode. Live view shuts off the viewfinder entirely and is limited in the modes it can use making it unnecessarily handicapped. The Olympus Live View is reputedly better implemented but their viewfinders are quite small. The XSI has no real video mode to take full advantage of a perfect implementation so the loss seems less great. The Nikon D90 for example does do video but is significantly more expensive.
