The Opteka EF-600 DG SUPER ETTL-II is designed to work with both the newest Canon EOS Digital SLR cameras for advanced flash photography. It has a maximum guide number of 148 feet or 45 meter at 85mm focal length ISO 100.The projection angle of the flashgun is set automatically to match the lens focal length ranging from 24mm wide-angle to 85mm medium-telephoto. Excellent Flash
This flash is a steel I give it a 5 based on price. You can pay more but I doubt youll do much better. It was recognized by my camera right away in the E-TTL mode. It works great with my rechargeable batteries. Im using it on my Canon S5IS. Im getting great results. You quickly learn how to bounce the flash off white ceilings. My favorite feature is the two built in flash reflector and / or the diffuser. Its great because youll never misplace these items. I also like the flexibility of the swivel in all directions it allows me to take some great angles.

Not a $229.99 Lens
This is an adequate lens but the new kit lens Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS for the 450D/Rebel XSi sells for $137.80 on its own...and that lens has image stabilization Looking at the prices for the 400D/Rebel XTi with and without this lens the price for this lens is around $40-$80. The folks who are selling this lens at this price must be laughing pretty hard each time they make a sale.

Not a great lens
I dont know if I have a poor copy of this lens or what but Im not crazy about the image quality it makes - even when stopped down. Im looking for a better wide lens. It is possible to get good sharp images from this lens but many images are "soft" from it.

This is the kit lens that comes with Canon Rebel XTs models and others. I just bought the XT 350 with this lens. Im a pure newbie to SLR photography but I dove right in since I have been a avid shooter with 35mm for years. I did a lot of research and read reviews on different type of lens as I was concerned with the UNFAIR bad rep of this kit lens after I ordered the camera. Even from expert review sites they admit the dogged perception of this lens is unfair indeed and this is actually a very good everyday lens. After 2 weeks of use I have to agree. Here are the reasons: 1 Afford ability: You can pick this lens used/aftermarket easily for under $100. It is worth every penny of that. The new more expensive model with Image Stabilization IS is better but overrated. Im a beginner and it only took me a week of learning to start getting the most out of this lens. Its image quality is terrific. You cant beat the value from this 2 Color and Sharpness: The lens is very sharp and can capture great images. The reason most newbies doesnt like this is because it doesnt work well with the point-n-shoot modes on the SLRs. I was frustrated too at first as images wasnt "right" but its the user not the lens. Play with the P mode instead of the point and shoot modes. Learn to use the exposure settings based on light conditions adjust your light conditions higher/lower to capture the amount of light appropriately and use the build in flash occasionally in very bright conditions. keep experimenting and you will see this lens potential. I am very happy with my latest set of results from my honeymoon trip so far.. they keep on getting better and better... 3 Weight portability - As a newbie you dont want huge zoom lens thats heavy to lug around. This is light weight from its plastic body and easy to carry around for everyday use. So if you are getting started learn to love this lens. You are using SLR for a reason so ditch the point and shoot start experimenting and have fun with this. After 2-3 weeks learning curve it will SMOKE ANY 35mm digital cameras results easily. You dont need the more expensive Image Stabilization version unless your hands shake all the time and need to take many night mode/slow shutter pictures. This lens is worth every $ of its $one benjamin street price tag and when you get very comfortable with SLR basics I then recommend the $four benjamins Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical IF as its replacement. But for now I am perfectly happy with this lens and believe you will too. Tamron 18-250mm AF Di ILD - a winner by any count
I have been using this lens for almost an year now and have put it through its paces and it has held up admirably. Image quality- Very acceptable considering the massive zoom span. Can be a bit soft on the edges at low apertures but stop the aperture down to f 11 and smaller and you get superb results. I use a monopod whenever I can and I am very pleased with the sharpness. Build quality and durability- very durable and well built The barrel lock is still positive as ever and the lens hood which I take off and on often is still firm and locks positively. I use it to photograph landscapes in the harsh deserts of Saudi Arabia and has had its share of knocks and bumps sand storms extreme heat and bitter cold but the finish is still as good as new Very impressive. Convenience- this MUST be its best selling feature with this zoom range you have most of what you need..wide to tele. Doesnt get much better than this Versatality and functionality is matchless Advice- make sure to retract the barrel in an lock when the lens is hanging on your neck as the heavy barrel will "zoom out" automatically due to its weight and thus might be subject to knocks and may damage the alignment of the barrel. Overall a superb every-day lens. Mine is permanently on and I take it off only when I go into ultra wide or hyper-telephoto. Definitely recommended as an everyday lens and WHAT A PRICE for this awesome zoom range

What a great Lens
I purchased Canon EF 28-105mm USM II lens a few months ago to go with my Canon XSi. I love taking photos of nature and have captured some really beautiful photos of butterflies other insects flowers and animals with this lens. My pictures have come out sharp and with excellent color. I appreciate how easy it is to use the manual zoom and the speed of the auto focus is really wonderful. To take close up photos I just set the camera on the close-up setting look for my subject set the zoom make sure I am 18 inches from the subject depress the shutter half way and wow - the auto focus is amazing on the subject and the background has just the right amount of blur. The quiet USM motor is nice too so that you dont scare away the insects with a lot of noise. All I have to do is crop my photo - no need for touch up of any kind. This camera and lens go great together. As far as value I think the quality is excellent for the money. It is worth every penny.

Excellent for its price
I have owned this lens for about a month now. I opted for this one instead of the 18-55mm kit lens upon reading numerous reviews that it is a great general purpose lens for starters. I have to say I am impressed with Canons USM system... and a relatively fast auto focus. I havent had a single time when the subjet was out of focus because of the lens mistake. It is pretty sharp around f5.6 all through the focal range.. mostly within 28-80mm range. To sum up: Pros: - A good general purpose Canon branded lens. 28-105mm is a decent focal range for starters. - USM is great. - AF is good.. mostly accurate. - Light weight not bulky in size. - Decently sharp throughout most of the range. Cons: - Colors are not very bright or vibrant.. but a little post processing is all it needs. Final notes: The 28-105mm is great for its flexible range and the decent sharpness and USM... I have used it for everything from semi-macros to portraits to landscapes to long exposure shots at night to birds. And the build is professionally solid. Worth the money

Canon Speedlite 580EX II - The best period.
Three Canon 580EX II speedlights form the core of my location lighting kit supplemented by 2 Canon 540EX speedlights. The 580EX II is fast powerful easy to use flexible built like a tank and is smarter than you and I combined. The 540EX has the same Master/Slave ETTL and manual circuitry as its newer cousin about as much power and sells on Ebay for about $200 or so. The 580EX II is very flexible very dependable has a fast recycle time has twice as much power as a Nikon 800 flash and the fastest control panel operation I have ever used. The key is a circular control wheel to change modes and settings similar to the circular wheel on the back of most Canon DSLRs. The design is so good that Nikon stole it for their new generation 900 flash unit. Canon EX series flash units are controlled by coded pre-flashes rather than infrared light as are Nikon units. These pre-flashes happen so quickly that one can barely see them. The 580EX II can control three separate groups of flash units abc with a virtually unlimited number of flashes assigned to each group. With ETTL operation one can set the lighting ratio of each group independently through a seven f/stop range from 8:1 to 1:8. In Manual mode the output of each group can be set from 1:1 to 1:128 power. The list of options goes on and on: multi-flash setting for true "stroboscopic" effects auto or manual zooming of the flash coverage from 24mm to 105mm a wide-angle panel that extends this to 14mm and a cool little pull-out white card to bounce some light into your subjects eyes when you are bouncing the flash unit off the ceiling or wall or whatever you can find. It syncs with high speed Canon shutter speeds has automatic or manual matching of the units color temperature output to the cameras white balance setting and full integration with the Canon 40D 50D 1D MkIII and I believe the new 5D MkII. I control my master 580EX II unit directly from the menu of my Canon 40D camera. The master unit can be set to not fire with the other flashes and still send out the pre-flashes to control all of the slaved strobes. I know Ive forgotten a bunch of less frequently used features the instruction book is about 250 pages long. Oh did I mention that the flash head swivels 360 degrees from either left or right and points straight ahead and straight up and at any angle in between? Makes it easy to point the flash head into a bounce umbrella or the corner of a room and still aim the sensor at the master flash unit. I tried to determine the maximum outdoor range over which the 580EX II would trigger a slave flash and gave up at 175 measured feet when I had run out of driveway and was standing in the woods. Ill test it again someday and see when I reach its limit. And the 580EX II and 540 EX strobes when used as masters can still control all three groups of slaves in manual mode not ETTL when triggered by a sync cord 580EX II or a wireless remote both the 580EX II and 540EX. All in all the best portable flash I have ever used during a 35 year career in photography.

I thought long and had about spending this much for a flash unit. This was my second year of doing the local football games and with a start time of 7:30 pm it didnt take long before there was no daylight to take pictures by. We cant afford big fancy lens so a good flash was the best answer. I set my camera to 1/200th in the manual mode and boost the ASA to 1600. I get good clear pictures with the unfortunate demon eyes effect in many. I use Photoshop to correct. I love the distance this flash will cover. I also like the fact that my camera battery lasts longer since I am not using the built in flash. I did invest in and recommend good rechargeable AA batteries for the unit. I cant believe I waited this long to get an external flash
